"Make no mistake about this," Biden responded. "Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Let’s get that straight. She’s a truly close personal friend, she is qualified to be president of the United States of America, she’s easily qualified to be vice president of the United States of America and quite frankly it might have been a better pick than me. But she’s first rate, I mean that sincerely, she’s first rate, so let’s get that straight."

Keep Biden talking...McCain/Paulin can just sit in their headquarters and plan the next Cabinet posts!

What in the world would possess him to say that, unless he's decided that he doesn't want to run for VP anymore.

It's Joe Biden ..... that's why. Biden has always been prone to sticking his foot in his mouth.

I think the problem is that he WONT stick his foot (or anything else) in there, that is why he keeps saying things like this!

Finally, I found something I can agree to with Banterer.

It sounds like he might be standing down for the benefit of the ticket. National polls have Palin over Biden as VP picks at 50%-40%. This may be a way to stand down and have Obama select Hillary to counter Palin.

That's a lot of the speculation I've seen. Anyone who's been around for more elections than me(this is actually my first presidential election, though I barely missed 04) know if something like that has happened before?

To me, it would sort of destroy an momentum Obama has had and look completely desperate. I guess if Biden is that unpopular it would still have almost two months to sink in if it happens soon.

I stated that it was speculation. Nobody knows why he would say something so idiotic except Biden himself.

As for destroying an(y) momentum Obama has had, he lost that momentum at the announcement of Palin. Ever since that announcement, Obama's numbers have been falling and fell dramatically after the RNCC. He, currently, has no momentum. He needs to get it back.

But, if the ticket is considering switching Biden for Hillary, they'd better do it now so, after the next couple of months, it will be less of an issue on November 4th.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to say you had tried to claim it as fact, I was just saying that I had heard similar speculation elsewhere.

Can they dump Biden now? The convention's already occurred and he's been formally nominated. I wouldn't think they could dump him now.

I would assume that there's a procedure in place if he decides that he wants out, but I honestly have no idea of what it would be.

The electoral college, if I remember correctly, can pick ANY VP. They dont necessarily have to pick the one on the ticket. (I will research and get back with confirm/no confirm on that)

That being said, if Obama made an announcement now he would have the news cycle for at least a week. That COULD get his momemtum back, as long as the cycle portrayed it in a good way, which they would.

Go figure...I was wrong (thanks to the West Wing episode where Leo Mcgarry dies during the election...BID)

from Wikipedia:
A faithless elector (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faithless_elector) is one who casts an electoral vote for someone other than whom they have pledged to elect, or who refuses to vote for any candidate. There are laws to punish faithless electors in 24 states. In 1952, the constitutionality of state pledge laws was brought before the Supreme Court (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States) in Ray v. Blair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_v._Blair), 343 U.S. 214 (http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?navby=CASE&court=US&vol=343&page=214) (1952). The Court ruled in favor of state laws requiring electors to pledge to vote for the winning candidate, as well as remove electors who refuse to pledge. As stated in the ruling, electors are acting as a functionary of the state, not the federal government. Therefore, states have the right to govern electors. The constitutionality of state laws punishing electors for actually casting a faithless vote, rather than refusing to pledge, has never been decided by the Supreme Court (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States). While many states may only punish a faithless elector after-the-fact, some such as Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan) have the power to cancel his or her vote.[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Electoral_College#cite_note-19)

Does anyone else think Biden was trying to shore up the Dem party? By praising Hillary he may be trying to keep some of her female supporters from switching to support Palin.

They can and they would if they thought Biden is bringing down the ticket.

That's kind of what I was thinking at first, but if that was his intention, then I think he went way too far, considering he basically said that Obama should've picked Hillary, or at least that's how I think it will be perceived.

Agree that he likely went to far. I'm not sure any of this year's candidates are the brightest bulbs in the box. :(

Palin, when asked in her interview with Charlie Gibson, said that she was qualified and ready to take the position.

Then, on the other side, we have Biden saying that even Hillary is more qualified than he is.

Before I get crusified, this is tongue in cheek. I'll even use a funny face if I have to.

In 1972 McGovern got rid of Thomas Eagleton (supposed psychiatric issues) and replaced him with Sargent Shriver. It's been done before.

If you havent seen it, it is worse in video than it is in words. It doesnt read very well but it views FAR worse. This is one of those moments where you go, "what in the world was he thinking??"

I never much liked him, mostly because I think he never knows when to shut up. I should like him for that reason, we are kindred souls in that matter...but it is not a good quality when you are in a position like his.
