KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Phillip Fulmer, who a decade ago brought Tennessee (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/clubhouse?teamId=2633) its first national championship in 47 years, will not return as the Volunteers' coach next year, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

An announcement is planned for Monday afternoon at Neyland Stadium. Fulmer, who has won 150 games at his alma mater and is the dean of SEC coaches, met with Tennessee officials Monday morning, and they reached a mutual agreement that it would be best for all parties if Fulmer did not return next season.

The sides also agreed that the 58-year-old Fulmer would coach the remainder of the 2008 season, his 17th in Knoxville. He signed a new seven-year contract last summer that was worth $2.4 million this season. A buyout of the contract after this season would cost $6 million.

The Vols (3-6, 1-5 SEC) have lost three of their past four games and are in danger of posting their second losing season in the last four years.

"Anybody that likes Tennessee and cares about what the product looks like on the field is frustrated," Fulmer said Sunday night, according to The Tennessean.

In the story posted on the Nashville newspaper's Web site, Fulmer told his coaches in a Sunday meeting to shield the players from their frustration.

"It's about our energy, the looks in our eyes, our demeanor and how we approach it in meetings and film sessions," Fulmer said about his coaching staff, according to the Tennessean. "We're professionals and we have and we will continue to be looking forward to playing."

There had been increasing scrutiny on Fulmer, who took over full time on Nov. 29, 1992 and has been at his alma mater as a player, assistant coach and head coach for more than 30 years.

The Vols won the national title in 1998 and were one of the top programs in all of college football in the 1990s, but the program hasn't been the same this decade. They've lost 31 games since the end of the 2001 season.

They wont hire anyone like that, expect them to go after a named guy, maybe Lane Kiffin or Mike Leach.

Leach would be a fool to leave Tech. As long as he keeps them going to bowl games and keeps the butts in the seats on gamedays he can do no wrong.

....well short of rape, murder, or incest.

He will get a 3X pay raise at a place like Tennessee where they average about 100k fans a week, good or bad. It is one of the top 5-10 jobs in the country.

Maybe so, but he is making plenty, knows who all the troublemakers are, knows where all the skeletans are burried, and can be a good ol' boy right where he is.

My bet is he says, "No thanks" to anyone else.

He might say no thanks but he was not very pleased with TT regents when they would not extend his contract. I dont know if he leaves but I wont be shocked. One thing that would keep him from it this year is a late season bowl.

Leach has made it pretty clear that he is not happy in Lubbock. I really do think he will be gone if the right suitor comes calling for him.

Leach is a good fit for Tech.

But with Clemson, Washington, Tennessee, and possibly Auburn, there are plenty of other good schools to choose from.

I like Leach, but his extremely over sized melon head would explode in a place like TN.

I don't see Washington. What a dead end job.

I'm curious how leach would interact with all the big alums/politics that he would have to endure at a place like tennessee.

Washington is definitely NOT a coaching destination.

Myers said today they would rework his contract after the season. He is in year 3 of 5, wiht around $1.7 million with incentives, endorsements and other stuff.

Of course that is no guarantee Leach will agree to it. He can buy out his contract for $500k, peanuts for TN.

Leach would be nuts to go to UT. Sure the pay would be much better, but the expectations would be unreal.

Yes, but the $800k bonus for completing next year... that could set him for life in a town like Lubbhick.

$800K? He'll make that back in 2 years at Tennessee with just his salary increase alone.

But then he'll be fired in 4 when he doesn't win the national title.

And in that 4 he'll make as much as he'd make at Tech in 8, so he comes out ahead.

Hell, Fulmer's BUYOUT was SIX MILLION and they didn't even flinch at firing him. Money is not a problem, and it would benefit Leach financially in a MAJOR way to go there.

I guess Leach has to decide if he wants to be a god in the Texas panhandle or a goat in eastern Tennessee.

That'd be one richass goat though. :D

And honestly, who's the goat then? Methinks it's not the guy with $10M in the bank.
