Well, this was the first full day of college football and boy was it a crazy day. Here are some scores of interest and some scores that just make you go "huh?".
Arkansas State 18, Texas A&M 14 - Have to start 100 miles down Highway 6 and celebrate the complete joke that is Texas A&M. Arkansas State?! Are you serious. Just to give you a point of reference - remember the depths of the Kevin Steele era? Remember how bad that was? I mean, it was the true low point of Baylor football in the last 40 years and some argued it was as bad as the Beall era of the late 60's-early 70's. Well, in Steele's 3rd season in 2001, the Bears opened with ASU at home and won 24-3. Aggie QB Stephen McGee threw 2 INT's and the Aggie defense allowed 255 yards rushing. And, oh yeah, how about this little nugget. Five years ago to the day, Fran's debut in College Station was a 26-11 victory over ... Arkansas State. Ouch!
Louisiana Tech 22, Mississippi State 14 - The Big 12 wasn't the only power conference to get bit by the upset bug. MSU hosted the Bulldogs from Ruston and finished the evening 0-1.
Arkansas 28, Western Illinois 24 - Petrino had to be wondering what he had gotten himself into at the start of the 4th quarter when he looked up and saw his heavily favored SEC squad down 17-14 to a directional school from Illinois. The Hogs scored two TD's to eek out a four point win.
The ACC - Man, did they take it on the chin this week. Other than Wake's win over our Bears, the ACC didn't do itself any favors this week. Clemson gets hammered by Alabama - North Carolina almost lost to McNeese State - NC State gets hammered by South Carolina - Maryland beats Delaware by 7 at home - Virginia Tech is upset on a blocked punt - USC embarrasses Virginia. Just wow!
Oklahoma State 39, Washington State 13 - Back to teams with more of a direct impact on our Bears. WSU didn't look very good at all totaling only 196 yards in total offense. OSU's offense looked potent at times but had some trouble finishing drives with TD's. WSU is definitely a team we can beat if we play well.
Oklahoma 57, Chattanooga 2 - Staying north of the Red River, the school known for its graduation rate was up 50-0 at the half on Chattanooga High School. Total offense at the half was: OU 343, Chatt 10. Yes, that is correct. And it's ridiculous! To me, the difference between OU and Mizzou is simple - one plays stellar defense, one doesn't. Also, OU tends to lay a whippin' on Texas, which is also a plus.
Did I mention that A&M lost to Arkansas State? Ok, just making sure. Could be a game to circle as another likely win for the Bears.
Texas Tech 49, Eastern Washington 24 - Tech QB Graham Harrell threw for 536 yards out in Lubbock tonight. That is just silly! 536 yards passing?!!?!?!??!!
Northwestern State 30, TAMU-Commerce 14 - Baylor's next opponent, the NSU Demons ran the ball 49 times for 206 yards to subdue A&M-Commerce. But, NSU was outgained in the game 302 yds to 289 yds. A&M Commerce QB Terry Mayo threw touchdown passes of 48 and 65 yards and finished with 279 yards passing for the game. Looks like Briles' offense should be able to do some damage come Saturday.
So, rejoice Baylor faithful - college football is back! The season is just a week old and the next two weeks look like a promising opportunity to get back on track.
