Well I WANTED my spring break to start last night with the gig, but my Human Evolution prof scheduled a test this morning. I, naturally, didn't study so on one of the essay questions I simply wrote "I didn't study and I don't feel like BSing an answer. I'm sorry. I did have a great time at my gig however, and you should try and make it out to the next one. Thanks for understanding" - I doubt I'll get credit.
After the test spring break had begun. Smoked a bowl, went to Double-R burgers and now me and a buddy are going to pick up some beer and go play disc golf. Might even make it out to the baseball game tonight.
This is my last spring break, and I get to spend it in Waco. Party Time.

Folks, I got home tonight to find that my wife had already departed for Nebraska. Her Dad has been dealing with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and has not been able to speak or had much quality of life for a few years. Anyway, he went into hospice yesterday. My mother-in-law called today to tell Mrs BF that Dad is not expected to live through the night and certainly not tomorrow.
I am here at the house and waiting with the dogs. When we hear, I'll put the dogs in a kennel and the kids and I will fly out. I don't know when or how long I'll be gone.
Please pray for Mrs BFs safe journey and for the family. Though this has been expected for a long time it is still hard. The man has always been a jewel.

Good afternoon!
Where is the rain????????? errghhhhhhh!
Yesterday I was up bright and early and in line at 6 am for the REI garage sale at the downtown location. No major purchases, but I got some good deals, like UA coldgear bottoms for $11 and a pair or North Face denali pants ($130) for $24. The first thing I grabbed in the mad rush was a 0* sleeping bag marked "Long". Later after the madhouse calmed alittle and I took the time to go through my plunder I noticed that it was a women's "Long". :(. Since chip wasn't there, I gave it to a female friend of mine who happened to be there.
Last night I spent 2 hours doing inventory on my cold weather gear,....still have the outer layer(shells) and fleece to do.

good morning all! :)
Prayers continued for those in need.
well I had an interview set for dallas this friday. I had a 9 a.m. phone call from them telling me it has been put on hold. I was supposed to go upto dallas today for another job(which would be in lubbock), but they've never called me back as to where exactly we were meeting. oh well, who wants to work in lubbock anyway!!
all is not lost though,........I got the latest issue of Eastmans Bowhunting magazine in the mail a few minutes ago. This is the episode that details which units to apply for in NM and just so happens the guy I'm putting in with for backpack elk/deer hunts emailed me this morning before I went to the post office about getting together to go over the units. (That was clearly a sign that God does love me and my "to die for" hair afterall.)

I am on a ferry crossing over to Bolivar as I'm with my mom and my son. We drove past OceanOso in that buolding that looks good and is standing strong. Saw a lot of piers missing and saw the crews putting in new sand on the beach. They are also doing some repair work on parts of the sidewalks.
The weather here is gorgeous, a bit cool and nice breeze.
I will go home sometime this afternoon.

Actually, my mom, my son and I parked the car and walked to get on the ferry. We just rode the ferry across to Bolivar and back. I saw a lot of several 18 wheelers getting on the ferry. I saw the lighthouse in the distance.
On the Strand, we ate out at Star Drug Store. My grilled chicken sandwich was delicious and my son enjoyed his big cheeseburger. That place has nice ambience inside.
I am now eating at Olive Garden in Collie Station.
To Bexar Fan and BF, may the grace and peace be with your family as Mrs. BF's dad is going to home with the Lord.

My son drove in the winning run in his baseball game Saturday morning. Tie game, bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the 7th, time expired. I am very proud of how he handled the gut-check situation. A very clutch liner over the 3rd baseman into no-man's land. Man that thing rolled for a while, and he made it to second, but they likely scored it a single. That was some good HS baseball.

OK guys....this is driving me nuts. Can anyone figure this out and explain it for me? My mind is not working right now.
http://www.blifaloo.com/images/illusions/missing_peice.gif
I can tell you the MATHEMATICAL reason why it is so, but I can't explain how it works out geometrically to make it happen......
Follow along and I'll see if I can explain it....
The first triangle has two smaller triangles inside it---blue and purple. The blue triangle at the top has a width of 5 units and a height of 2 units for an area of 5 units. The purple triangle at the bottom has a width of 8 units and a height of 3 units for an area of 12 units. That leaves the two-colored "rectangular" area from the top that is 5 units wide and 3 units tall for an area of 15 units.
Now, the best way to explain it is that when you shift the triangles around, it changes the area of the formerly "rectangular" portion. In other words, it changes the "rectangular" portion from having an area of 15 units at the top to having 16 units at the bottom, thus the extra space.
Now, WHY that is the case? I don't really know. The two inside triangles have the same area in both larger triangles, so it doesn't make sense to me mathematically why that would be the case. I'm still efforting on that part.

One possible solution upon further examination:
There is no evidence that the two apparent triangles inside the larger triangles are actually triangles. For example, count 5 units from the left and 3 units up on each triangle---the top triangle appears to intersect perfectly with the gridline, however in the bottom example, there is a slight difference.
I really think the only possible explanation is that the initial shapes themselves are NOT actual triangles, even though they may appear to be. More accurately, the top "triangle" might be a triangle, but the bottom one might not be.

Limnos, Giga is correct, kinda. The bottom figures apparant hypotenuse (it really isnt a hypotenuse) is bowed so its not really a triangle. Its an illusion It is often used to teach Curry’s Paradox.
"I really think the only possible explanation is that the initial shapes themselves are NOT actual triangles, even though they may appear to be. More accurately, the top "triangle" might be a triangle, but the bottom one might not be." Giga is correct here.
"The first triangle has two smaller triangles inside it---blue and purple. The blue triangle at the top has a width of 5 units and a height of 2 units for an area of 5 units. The purple triangle at the bottom has a width of 8 units and a height of 3 units for an area of 12 units. That leaves the two-colored "rectangular" area from the top that is 5 units wide and 3 units tall for an area of 15 units."
This part is wrong. A right triangle with a w of 5 and a h of 2 will have an area of 5.92. A right triangle with a w of 8 and a h of 3 will have an area of 8.5+.
I used this puzzle in a few geometry classes I taught. Its an interesting lesson in trusting given facts vs. appearance. If the two legs of figures are the same and the hyp is the same the area has to be the same. The key is the hyp of each figure is different. The bottom figure appears to be a triangle but isnt.

The "hypotenuse" in the second pic isnt a hypotenuse. It is curved or bent. This allows for the extra space. Since the bottom figure is not a triangle using the formula for the area of a triangle will get you no where. You are correct in my switching the terms "hyp" with "area" in my example.

Interesting find down in Galveston...
GALVESTON, Texas — Experts know of about a dozen Civil War-era shipwrecks off the Texas coast. They might have just identified another.
Contractors searching for debris from Hurricane Ike near Galveston Island took a sonar scan of what the Texas Historical Commission believes is a previously undiscovered ship carrying cotton that sank in 1864.
The Carolina, also known as the Caroline, was a privately owned merchant ship that tried to break though a federal blockade of Galveston. After being pursued for several hours by Union gunships, the crew of the Carolina ran the ship aground in shallow water between Galveston and San Luis Pass, then set it on fire rather than let it be captured.
Historians said records indicate the ship sank in the area where workers took the sonar image. It had probably been buried in sand until Hurricane Ike scoured the Gulf floor.
"It's certainly significant if it turns out to be a historic wreck, as we think it is," Steven Hoyt, state marine archaeologist with the Texas Historical Commission, told the Houston Chronicle.
Hoyt said the shape of the image indicates the wreckage is a ship, and that he will study its size, style and characteristics to determine whether it could be the Carolina. Divers will investigate the site in the spring or summer when the Gulf of Mexico waters are calmer. Even then, visibility could be limited.
The possible wreck was discovered about a month ago by General Land Office contractors hired to clean the surrounding bays of debris from Ike. Crews have located hundreds of cubic yards of underwater debris, including a shrimping boat, washing machines, refrigerators and furniture, said Jim Suydam, land office spokesman.
Crews also have found two previously charted Civil War-era shipwrecks: the Acadia and the Will-o-the-Wisp. The two ships are protected state archaeological landmarks.
State workers will not reveal the location of the new possible shipwreck to prevent looters from discovering the site.

Good morning all!! Busy day today. Work this morning. Lunch with TG. Then get stuff ready for the house/dog sitter, pack, coordinate with kids, and get some sleep. Early morning tomorrow, with a 7:30 flight out of Austin. Man, I need a wife....oh yeah, she's in Nebraska.
Hope she's not reading this....

Kudo's to you for going. It means more to the kids than you know. All my kids played one sport or three. They still want me at all their games. D3 plays co-ed soccer. And at age 21 still wants me to show up for her games.
My wife is a crack-up. She grew up with 6 brothers who are, um, vocal and sometimes negative. When we would go to games and any of the kids would make a mistake she would make totally inappropriate comments. In her normal voice, she would ask why they would "do that."
I had to keep reminding her that she was not supposed to bring up the negative. At least where everyone could hear her. I finally bought two bag chairs and started sitting away from others where no one can hear her. She got lots of dirty looks. One mom told me they loved our child and liked me, but didn't care for my wife due to her comments. It took a couple years to get her out of that.
