LIQR is the expert on goats, and I saw this headline at Yahoo where it shows a movie icon followed by the headline-- "Genetic disorder makes goats faint and fall when startled." I never heard of that, so I googled it up...

I am doing well this morning, thanks for asking! (much better than my mood last night:cursing:)
Trying to get payroll out the door this morning, but my offices felt the need this week to bombard me with last minute "high importance" emails. I have gotten to the point where I dont really care if you mark the email "high importance" because 80% of them are. Someone keeps calling Wolf.

Dont want to bore folks with goat stuff but fainting goats were developed as a breed of meat goats in Tennessee. Their fight or flight instinct is messed up in that instead of fleeing they sometimes just pass out. I thought it is interesting that you cant use electric fencing with them. When shocked they will pass out on fence. Shorts out the fence and kills the goat.

If you had a whole herd that carried the gene you could walk out and clap your hands and they would all pass out. In reality the trait is recessive and only a few in the herd will have it.

Fine. For now. Going to suck later this week.
The mayor did issue a voluntary evacuation for the West End today. That makes it look more likely that I'm going to my parents' house with the baby Friday. Although we're behind the very end of the Seawall, our water supply is tied to the West End's. If it floods down there (and anything beyond a 3 ft storm surge will cause a flood) they'll likely shut off the water supply to keep it from being overrun. That will shut off our water supply and I don't want to be in a house with an infant and no water.
I'll make the determination about whether or not I take the irreplaceable things with me probably Thursday, depending on how the track is looking. The hurricane is so all over the place that I think everyone's pretty much baffled as to where it's actually going to go.
MSNBC has a story up tonight that talks about Galveston. It said that if a Category 3 goes straight into Galveston and heads up the Houston Ship Channel, the effects will be more disastrous than Katrina. It also quoted the head of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Fund--who everyone down here has to get their windstorm insurance from (for example, Allstate covers windstorm for us through 9/22, after that I have to sign a waiver to renew and then go to TWIC for windstorm coverage and FEMA for flood coverage)--TWIC said their exposure in Galveston County alone was more than $18 BILLION. Yeah, you read that right...$18 Billion.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26628436/ (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26628436/)
What will be really ugly is if it shifts and they need to evacuate down here, since they don't really have any good idea where it's going right now. There will be so little time to get out that it will be a huge mess, I fear.
I think about all this, and then I think about the folks living in Galveston on September 8, 1900. One hundred and eight years ago yesterday, people woke up and just went about their day. The wind was blowing and the gulf was choppy, but they never knew what was coming until it got here, and of course by then it was too late. In a weird way, we have all this technology, and we know it's coming, so we can sit here and hypothesize, but for this particular storm, we don't know WHERE it's coming. At any rate, the anniversary of the 1900 storm is always kind of somber to me. Perhaps it's because I'm a BOI.
I always figured Wacoso would marry a boi.
Seriously, stay safe you guys.

well the projected path still shows landfall near Corpus Christi (if not directly hit).
It appears that it could be a Cat 3 storm when making landfall. When it makes the turn north, it depends on how far to the left or right it does to determine the exact amount of wind/rain Central Texas will receive. There is the strong possibility that it will go straight over Waco.
Could make for a bumpy weekend here in the Heart of Central Texas.

XP from the Ike thread:
FYI, Galveston has just issued a voluntary evacuation for the West End of the Island, which begins just yards from our house. We are the last subdivision behind the Seawall, and we're not behind it by much. They will be declaring a state of emergency for the city at 11:30 today, according to a story just posted on the Daily News website.

Good day at work today, 6 hours sportfishing. Sadly, all I caught were a TON of crappy cod and a few of these http://www.goldenstateimages.com/GSI_big.php?img=FGE-029. Just as ugly as they appear in the picture, hard to catch and they are "poisonous" so you have to be careful brining them in. Apparently they taste very good but the filets cant be more than 2-4oz and there is a 5 catch limit. Got a couple rockfish, a sol and some random garbage but nothing worth writing home about. Still better than the best day at the office.

Mandatory evacuation ordered for the West End which starts about 5 feet from our house. Voluntary evacuation for the rest of the Island. The mayor said there just wasn't time to order a mandatory evacuation for the rest of the Island.
They're boarding up our house right now (driving the dog insane). I'm heading out tomorrow morning after my dad comes to move our stuff--he's getting here about 8 am to help me take things b/c he has an SUV. Wacoso will head out after the store is secured. If it looks bad for Houston, I'll leave with my parents, but I want to limit Pooky's travel and stress and unfamiliarity as much as possible.
Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, friends.
I hope that you guys get to stay home for obvious reasons. I'm really worried about the storm surge reports for you guys. :(

Well ****.
They're boarding it up tomorrow morning. I have faith that God is bigger than any hurricane, but I'll admit it, it's a little stressful right now.
sigh.
BC, will still pray for you all as well as the Islanders. I know my mom will stay put in Bacliff.

Good Morning, Vines. Is Katy the best place to evacuate to? Just asking for the sake of BC.
Re: sadness and Element. We really liked our Element, but there are some things that make it great for a couple or single person, but not so great for families. Only seats 4 and suicide doors. Inconvenient. Once our daughters were in the E, the loved it...reclining back seats, spill proof interior, and a lot of fun. Oh well.
Now we're waiting on the Pathfinder to get delivered from Dallas. It's an Off Road edition w/premium pkg (tougher suspension parts but has leather and sunroof). It's also green, canteen green. Cool color.

And put er' into gear
I know I should be hurtin'
But I'm smiling ear to ear
Cuz I'm mowin down the roses
I'm mowin down the roses
I'm mowin down the roses
That you planted in our yard
I poured out your purty perfume
Straight down the toilet bowl
And I ripped your face straight off the wall
Left nothing but some holes
I loaded up your closets
Into fifteen garbage bags
And I smoked with your potpourri
On a burn pile in the back
Down in Mississippi
Its getting perfectly clear
That anything you used to love
Just aint gonna grow round here
I’m mowing down the roses
That you planted in our yard

Today's scientific question is: What in the world is electricity and
where does it go after it leaves the toaster?
Here is a simple experiment that will teach you an important
electrical lesson: On a cool dry day, scuff your feet along a carpet,
then reach your hand into a friend's mouth and touch one of his dental
fillings. Did you notice how your friend twitched violently and cried
out in pain? This teaches one that electricity can be a very powerful
force, but we must never use it to hurt others unless we need to learn
an important lesson about electricity.
It also illustrates how an electrical circuit works. When you scuffed
your feet, you picked up batches of "electrons", which are very small
objects that carpet manufacturers weave into carpet so that they will
attract dirt. The electrons travel through your bloodstream and
collect in your finger, where they form a spark that leaps to your
friend's filling, then travel down to his feet and back into the
carpet, thus completing the circuit.
AMAZING ELECTRONIC FACT: If you scuffed your feet long enough without
touching anything, you would build up so many electrons that your
finger would explode! But this is nothing to worry about unless you
have carpeting.
Although we modern persons tend to take our electric lights, radios,
mixers, etc. for granted, hundreds of years ago people did not have
any of these things, which is just as well because there was no place
to plug them in. Then along came the first Electrical Pioneer,
Benjamin Franklin, who flew a kite in a lightning storm and received a
serious electrical shock. This proved that lightning was powered by
the same force as carpets, but it also damaged Franklin's brain so
severely that he started speaking only in incomprehensible maxims,
such as, "A penny saved is a penny earned." Eventually he had to be
given a job running the post office.
After Franklin came a herd of Electrical Pioneers whose names have
become part of our electrical terminology: Myron Volt, Mary Louise
Amp, James Watt, Bob Transformer, etc. These pioneers conducted many
important electrical experiments. Among them, Galvani discovered
(this is the truth) that when he attached two different kinds of metal
to the leg of a frog, an electrical current developed and the frog's
leg kicked, even though it was no longer attached to the frog, which
was dead anyway. Galvani's discovery led to enormous advances in the
field of amphibian medicine. Today, skilled veterinary surgeons can
take a frog that has been seriously injured or killed, implant pieces
of metal in its muscles, and watch it hop back into the pond --
almost.
But the greatest Electrical Pioneer of them all was Thomas Edison, who
was a brilliant inventor despite the fact that he had little formal
education and lived in New Jersey. Edison's first major invention in
1877 was the phonograph, which could soon be found in thousands of
American homes, where it basically sat until 1923, when the record was
invented. But Edison's greatest achievement came in 1879 when he
invented the electric company. Edison's design was a brilliant
adaptation of the simple electrical circuit: the electric company
sends electricity through a wire to a customer, then immediately gets
the electricity back through another wire, then (this is the brilliant
part) sends it right back to the customer again.
This means that an electric company can sell a customer the same batch
of electricity thousands of times a day and never get caught, since
very few customers take the time to examine their electricity closely.
In fact, the last year any new electricity was generated was 1937.
Today, thanks to men like Edison and Franklin, and frogs like
Galvani's, we receive almost unlimited benefits from electricity. For
example, in the past decade scientists have developed the laser, an
electronic appliance so powerful that it can vaporize a bulldozer 2000
yards away, yet so precise that doctors can use it to perform delicate
operations to the human eyeball, provided they remember to change the
power setting from "Bulldozer" to "Eyeball."

Goin’ through my closet the other day
I found an old yearbook
Flipped right to the page of that senior trip
Down there on that Panama strip
We all started yellin’ when we smelled the beach
Couldn't wait to try our fake I.D.’s
We only had a few days
And a whole lot of memories to make
Oh man we were livin’
Didn't waste one minute
We talked and drank and danced and said goodbye
We laughed until we cried
This past year my family
Was sittin’ cross-legged 'round the Christmas tree
Listenin’ to granddad
We all knew it probably be his last
He was crackin’ jokes and we were takin’ turns
Tellin’ stories ‘bout fishin’ or lessons learned
Out on the porch with him
We all felt like kids again
Oh man we were livin
Sittin' there reminiscin'
We sang and talked and traveled back in time
We laughed until we cried
It's like the best days under the sun
Every emotion rolled into one
A little of this a little of that
Kinda happy kinda sad
Just the other night the baby was cryin’
So I got out of bed rocked her awhile
And I held her tight
And I told her it would be all right
And my mind went back to a few years ago
When we tried so long
We almost gave up hope
And I remember you
Comin' in and tellin’ me the news
Oh man we were livin’
Goin’ crazy in the kitchen
We danced and screamed and held each other tight
We laughed until we cried

In all seriousness I've always been kinda partial to Clemson. The scenic entourage that came to the regional baseball game several years ago was very impressive. Add those to their excellent ag program and you have a winner. If I had lived in the southeast and wasn't recruited by duke to play basketball, I would have gone to clemson most likely.

Wacoso and BBL are meeting for dinner at Freebirds in CS. BBL is there for work stuff, as you can imagine, there's planning to do for TAMUG.
The forecast has shifted and the storm is now projected to go in 14 miles from our house, at San Luis Pass. It's the worst case scenario for Houston, as it will go straight up the ship channel. Fill up your gas tanks, as the refineries here will sustain massive damage.
As for Wacoso and me, we just talked on the phone and realized we have to come to terms with the fact that we are going to lose everything in 24 hours, most likely. In my head, I was prepared for a few feet of water and losing some things. We are likely going to lose everything at our home and certainly our business.

Does anyone have Yahoo Instant Messaging?
Yup.
not sure if my family is bailing out of Corpus or not. My dad is usually pretty stubborn about things like that. I'll make a call and check a little later this afternoon.
made the call to my parents, my dad said he'd stay if stayed a category 2, he'll pack up and leave for a 3. He's boarding up our house as we speak. They'll probably head down to Hebronville.
Made the call to my mom and sis this evening as well. They are staying at home near Corpus since the storm is heading north, and just apparently heard from my brother in Houston who said that the news said that they should stay put. Mom and sis BEGGED them to get the heck out of dodge, but apparently they are buying supplies and hunkering down. Please keep them in your prayers too.

And she doesn't drink.

Holy cow. This is from CNN right now. This is the highest point on Seawall. Our next door neighbor's father sculpted this statue, a memorial to the storm survivors of 1900, and they are the models in the statue. The waves are already taller than the statue on the highest point on Seawall (this is about 44th street or so).

Wow BC...I cant imagine what that is like for you since you know the area so well.
Have you and your family decided on if you are staying in Katy or not?

Dont teach her to drink. Nothing worse than a woman drinking all your good liquor. You will save money and always have a ride home. I always hoped to find a woman that didnt speak English so I wouldnt have to come home and talk about my day. Gloria pretended to only speak Spanish till it was too late and we were married.

On top of it all, it looks like Pooky's tooth is going to debut soon.
Not sure if they still make these or not, because my "baby" is 12 now. But we used these little gel teething rings that we put in the freezer and let the baby chew on. The cool would sooth their mouth when teething. They LOVED those things. Had 3 that we kept in heavy rotation.

We're staying here. Only 60-70 mph winds predicted for katy and about 4 in. of rain. We'll be fine. Probably won't have electricity, but we'll be fine here. And we'll be closer and ready to go on the Island as soon as they will let us back, but as of now, there's no indication when that will be.

(trying not to cry)
Thanks for the thoughts and prayers friends.
I was just thinking about that on the way in to work. I'm really sorry BC.
On top of it all, it looks like Pooky's tooth is going to debut soon.
Sweet! With the storm comes a rainbow. Perhaps she'll sleep well again now.
well, I had already made date plans with wants' girl, and she didn't want to change them to go to the game. I'm beginning to think she doesn't like football as much as she said she did.
So I'm sorry I wont' be able to join anyone after the game. Y'all have fun!
(Shaking head) Dad gum. If I could be in Waco and see us beat those suckers. I went to the Alamo Bowl when they beat us and have a hatred for them.
BC, please go to Chips. It's nothing but a drive for you and the baby. I don't like this Katy thing.
And I'm liking it less by the minute.
Please do BC. Brady needs to meet his future girl friend. Seriously, if anybody needs a place, we have a room.
Morning, folks. If anyone has an extra ticket for the game, I have a house guest from Houston I would like to bring. I think I will be home at lunch to meet her at the house and will check the board then to see if any tickets are available.
Is there a tailgate tonight? If so, we'll bring her. She's a first year teacher in Houston ISD. Vol will be acting as her chaperone and protector. Maybe he should have taken notes from Chiefsbear last week, since we didn't raise girls. :)
It sounds like she didn't get her MRS degree. Perhaps Vol should be introducing her to some folks instead of scaring them off. HCB are you going? He's an unemployed hermit, but at least he knows how to hunt and fish.

You can also soak a wet rag in some orajel and put it in the freezer so it is both cool on their teeth and has some medicine.

We used to boil cloves and rub it on the baby's gums...
